Bodofa’s 35th Death Anniversary Observed
KOKRAJHAR,MAY 1: Marking the 35th death anniversary observation of Bodofa Upendra Nath Brahma, former president of the All Bodo Students Union (ABSU) unveiled the statue and road naming ceremony & rotary of Bodofa Upendra Nath Brahma Marg along the Kailash Colony on Thursday in New Delhi in the august presence of chief minister of Assam,Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma, Delhi chief minister,Rekha Gupta,Union minister of state,Pabitra Margherita, Assam cabinet minister Urkhao Gwra Brahma, Pramod Boro, the chief executive member of Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) , and several dignataries.
The event withessesd a well attended gathering of the peoples cutting across the state of Assam,apart from Bodoland Territorial Region, and national capital region (NCR),New Delhi.
The government of India,and government of Delhi named street and unveiled a statue in honor of Bodofa Upendranath Brahma in the heart of the national capital.This event marks an important recognition for the Bodo community. Notably, this will be the second roadway in New Delhi commemorating a distinguished personality from Assam, following the one dedicated to Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi.
According to an official notification issued by the Office of the Superintending Engineer-I, South Zone, MCD, the road stretch from Lala Lajpat Rai Marg near Kailash Colony Metro Station (A-18, Kailash Colony) to Lala Lajpat Rai Marg near A-5/A-6, Kailash Colony will now be known as “Bodofa Upendra Nath Brahma Marg from today”.
In his speech, Union Home Minister, Amit Shah said that the statue and the Bodofa Upendra Nath Brahma Marg along the Kailash Colony has been inaugurated today in memory of Bodofa Upendra Nath Brahma,who dedicated and sacrificed his entire life towards the welfare and uplift of the Bodos and other down trodden communities in the state.
He stated that the Bodoland region has now reached as a peaceful area in the state of Assam since post signing of BTR peace accord in 2020(27th January),and accordingly several developmental aspects have been arrived.He informed that almost 78 percent clauses of the BTR peace accord are implemented, and all clauses are to be implemented within two years in days to come.He said that the Bodoland region of the state of Assam is now gaining up it’s developmental aspects as the state government and centre are jointly working dedicatedly towards the welfare and development.
CM Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma hailed the initiatives initiated by the government of India,and BTR government for initiating the noble venture with installing statue of Bodofa Upendra Nath Brahma,and road naming ceremony in the national capital.
He has extended his gratitude and thanks to the Union Home Minister, Amit Shah for implementing the noble venture.
CEM of BTR, Pramod Boro stated that the unveiling of statue and road naming of Bodofa Upendra Nath Brahma Marg is regarded as a tribute honours Bodofa’s enduring contributions to the upliftment of marginalized communities, promotion of democratic values, and advocacy for community rights. The commemoration also signifies the growing national acknowledgment of his legacy and leadership.He said that the BTR government is committed to work for all round development of the society across the region.
” The event is seen as a landmark moment in honouring Bodofa’s vision and contributions beyond regional boundaries, elevating his legacy to a national platform”,he said.
” The people of BTR have witnessed the grand observation of the event as our revered Bodofa Upendra Nath Brahma’s legacy have been immortalised in our nation’s capital with the unveiling of his grand statue and the naming of a major road in New Delhi’s Kailash Colony. The day is regarded as a historic day for the people of the Bodoland region as well as state of Assam”, CEM Boro said.
He said, ” Bodofa Upendra Nath Brahma’s visionary leadership infused the Bodoland movement with fresh purpose, clarity, and direction. His various tenures in ABSU, including as President, saw the student body transformed into a powerful platform for democratic assertion, steering the struggle with intellect, restraint, and an unshakable commitment to peace”, Boro added.
The death anniversary of Bodofa Upendra Nath Brahma was organised jointly by the Government of Bodoland Territorial Region and All Bodo Students Union in New Delhi.
Meanwhile, the 35th death anniversary of Bodofa Upendra Nath Brahma, revered as the father of the Bodo community, was solemnly observed today in Kokrajhar.
The central programme was organized at Tulungapuri, Dotma, by the All Bodo Students Union (ABSU) and the Upendra Nath Brahma Trust, in collaboration with the Department of Culture, Government of Assam. The day began with the hoisting of the ABSU flag by Assistant Education Secretary Romeo K Basumatary, followed by floral tributes to Bodofa.
Assam Cabinet Minister Nandita Gorlosa, BTC Deputy Chief Gobinda Basumatary, BTC Executive Members Rakesh Brahma and Dhananjay Basumatary, Additional Chief Secretary Dr. Kalyan Chakravorty, and Director of UN Academy Krishna Gopal Basumatary paid homage at the event.
Students, local intellectuals, and admirers of Bodofa’s legacy also gathered at Tulungapuri to offer their respects and reflect on his contributions.
