Workshop with elected legislators on child protection held at Tamulpur

KOKRAJHAR, NOV 25: A one-day with elected legislators of the Bodoland Territorial Region on protection of the child rights, and the role of lawmakers in Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) was held at the conference hall of district commissioner office Tamulpur on Saturday with a day-long programme scheduled in Tamulpur district.
Nearly hundred participants including elected members of the Bodoland Territorial Council Legislative Assembly (BTCLA), officials from UNICEF, departmental officers of BTC government,media fraternities were participated the event.

Pramod Boro, the chief executive member of Bodoland Territorial Region inaugurated the event which was organised jointly by Centre for Development & Peace Studies (CDPS), in association with UNICEF and BTR government.
CEM Boro, in his speech informed that various initiatives taken by the Bodoland Territorial Council government for protection of child rights. He also talked about the initiatives that the BTC plans to implement in the future in this area.

Boro has announced that the BTR government is launching “Mission Child Labour Free BTR” on the 1st of January, 2024. He said that this is a flagship mission of Govt. of BTR and it will be executed in partnership with MV Foundation, UNICEF Assam & NE India, and Centre for Development and Peace Studies for which why the Govt of BTR will invest and ensure that we meet our noble goal by 2025.

He also announced the creation of a Child-Friendly BTR within the next three years which would be jointly initiated by BTR government, UNICEF and CDPS.
” Our children are our future, and as lawmakers, it is our primary responsibility to ensure that the rights of every child in BTR are protected.

On the occasion, my colleague EMs & MCLAs & I took a solemn pledge to uphold & protect Child Rights as enshrined in the ‘Convention of the Rights of the Child’, and to utilise our position as members of BTCLA to advocate & champion this noble & imperative cause”, Boro said.

Katiram Boro, speaker of BTC Legislative Assembly, Gobinda Chandra Basumatary, deputy CEM, Dharma Narayan Das, EM, . Sanjoy Swargiary, MCLA, and Dr. Madhulika Jonathan, Chief of UNICEF Field Office were also addressed the occasion.
Wasbir Hussain, Executive Director of CDPS and eminent journalist, delivered the welcome address.

He said that the project activities undertaken by CDPS, in association with UNICEF, since June 2023 was elaborated during his welcome address.
“The activities undertaken during this period included one sensitization session and four mentoring sessions with media persons of the BTR area as well as profiling of five MCLA constituencies of BTC on children-related issues”, he said
