NTPC Bongaigaon Salakati Dedicates Burn HDU and Eye OT Facilities at Kokrajhar Medical College

KOKRAJHAR,MAY 14: In a significant step towards enhancing healthcare delivery in the Bodoland Territorial Region, NTPC Bongaigaon Salakati dedicated two critical facilities— a 6-bedded Burn High Dependency Unit (HDU) and a renovated Eye Operation Theatre (OT)—to Kokrajhar Medical College and Hospital under its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme.

The inaugural ceremony was graced by Joyanta Basumatary, Member of Parliament, Kokrajhar, who appreciated NTPC Bongaigaon’s continued commitment to social development in the region. He remarked that the newly inaugurated healthcare units would provide timely medical attention to people in need, especially the poor and underprivileged. He also stated that such projects reflect the importance of public-sector contribution in building medical infrastructure in underserved regions.

Masanda M. Pertin, IAS, District Commissioner, Kokrajhar, noted that the facilities inaugurated were not just infrastructural additions but a symbol of timely intervention. She expressed her gratitude to NTPC Bongaigaon for its proactive and consistent support to the district. Perrin further added that the partnership between the administration and corporates like NTPC plays a pivotal role in the district’s development journey.

Lawrence Islary, MLA, East Kokrajhar, also shared his views during the ceremony. He said that the region had long awaited such critical care facilities, and NTPC Bongaigaon’s initiative had addressed an important public need. He urged all stakeholders to ensure that the infrastructure is maintained well and reaches those who need it the most.

Arnab Maitra, Business Unit Head, NTPC Bongaigaon, stated that the initiative was a reflection of NTPC’s ethos of inclusive development. Shri Maitra mentioned that NTPC not only generates power but also empowers lives through its meaningful CSR engagements. The facilities inaugurated at Kokrajhar Medical College were part of a broader commitment to ensure that the benefits of development reach every corner of society.

The event was attended by Prof. Dr. Atul Chandra Baro, Principal and Chief Superintendent; Prof. Dr. Bhubaneswar Saikia, Superintendent; Smt. Kabita Deka, ACS, Additional Deputy Commissioner, Kokrajhar; Shri Pratima Brahma, Chairperson, Kokrajhar Municipal Board; Shri Onkar Nath, AGM (HR), NTPC Bongaigaon; Dr. Deepayan Paul, Chief Medical Officer, NTPC Bongaigaon, along with senior officials from NTPC and hospital representatives.

The Burn HDU, developed at a cost of INR 60.49 lakh, is equipped with modern equipment including ICU beds, cardiac monitors, defibrillators, crash carts, BI PAP machines, syringe pumps, scrub stations, and patient mobility support systems. This dedicated unit is expected to significantly enhance the region’s capacity to handle burn-related emergencies.

Similarly, the Eye Operation Theatre, upgraded at a cost of INR 9.51 lakh, features aluminum cabins, autoclaves, RO water purifier, washing machine, and scrub station. The OT is expected to cater to over 200 surgeries annually, improving ophthalmic care for the population in and around Kokrajhar.
