KOKRAJHAR,JUNE 19: NTPC Bongaigaon, Salakati under its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives, organized a medical examination and identification camp on 10th June 2025 as part of the Girl Empowerment Mission (GEM) 2025. This initiative is a part of NTPC’s sustained efforts to create equal opportunities for underprivileged girls, fostering an environment for holistic learning and development.
The camp was inaugurated by Shri Arnab Maitra, Business Unit Head and Head of Project, NTPC Bongaigaon, in the presence of Smt. Kasturi Maitra, President, Bardwi Shikla Ladies Club, NTPC Bongaigaon. Speaking on the occasion, Shri Maitra emphasized NTPC Bongaigaon’s commitment to nurturing the potential of young girls and ensuring the timely and effective execution of the GEM program. He mentioned that the medical camp marked just the beginning of a transformative journey ahead.
Smt. Kasturi Maitra, along with office bearers of Bardwi Shikla Ladies Club, also reviewed the arrangements and extended wholehearted support to the initiative, reaffirming the club’s dedication to community-focused welfare.
The camp saw the participation of 50 girls aged between 10 and 12 years from nine local schools. Out of these, 40 girls will be selected for the four-week residential module, scheduled to commence from 1st July 2025. The event included health assessments, consent form collection from guardians, and measurements for uniforms and identity cards—all carried out by NTPC officials and support teams.
Now in its fourth edition at NTPC Bongaigaon, the GEM program is structured to promote educational enrichment, personal hygiene awareness, basic self-defense, and confidence-building activities. It incorporates sessions on communication in Hindi and English, foundational mathematics, yoga, nutrition, and sports. To ensure overall personality development, modules on gender sensitivity, cyber safety, team activities, and cultural engagement through music, dance, and theatre are also part of the curriculum.
A baseline survey was earlier conducted on 3rd May 2025 to evaluate the existing knowledge levels of the selected students, helping customize the modules for greater impact.
The GEM initiative, since its inception in 2018 with just 392 participants across three locations, has now grown into a national program, reaching 17 states and benefiting more than 12,700 girls. It continues to be a transformative force in challenging societal norms, particularly the stigma around female foeticide, and empowering girls with knowledge and confidence.
Through GEM and several other socially driven interventions, NTPC reinforces its role not only as India’s largest power producer but also as a responsible corporate citizen committed to inclusive growth and societal development.
