KOKRAJHAR, APRIL 29: In a significant move to prevent artificial flood during the upcoming monsoon season, the Urban Development department of Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) government launched a major drainage and sewer cleaning drive in Kokrajhar town
On Sunday,the initiative began with cleaning the drainage along the Jwhwlao Daimary(JD) Road in Kokrajhar.
The initiative campaign, initiated under the leadership of the BTR government that aims to clear blocked drains and sewers to ensure the smooth flow of rainwater and thereby reduce the risks of waterlogging that often disrupts normal life during heavy rains.
Saikhong Basumatary,the executive member of Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) took part and initiated the cleaning operation along the drains.
The drive commenced at the JD Road area of Kokrajhar town where clogged drains and sewer lines were targeted. Heavy machinery such as JCBs were deployed to remove accumulated debris, and in several locations, officials and workers used hand tools to manually clean the drains, removing solid waste, mud, and plant growth obstructing the water pathways.
EM Basumatary, was accompanied by the Council Head of the Urban Development Department (CHD) and senior department officials, actively supervised the work on the ground. The presence of senior leadership in the operation showcased the seriousness with which the BTC government views urban cleanliness and flood prevention. Speaking to the media during the drive, EM Basumatary emphasized that timely cleaning of drains is critical to protecting the town from the severe impacts of waterlogging, which not only disrupts transportation and business but also poses health risks to the public.
He urged citizens to cooperate with the initiative by refraining from dumping garbage into drains and encouraged everyone to contribute to maintaining the town’s cleanliness. Basumatary reiterated that the BTR administration is committed to improving urban infrastructure and that today’s drive marks the beginning of a series of measures that will be taken to make Kokrajhar a cleaner, safer, and more resilient town.
The cleaning drive received positive responses from local residents, who expressed hope that the pre-monsoon preparation would alleviate the annual problem of water accumulation in low-lying areas.
