Director of Health Services Dr Phangcho visits Malaria-hit areas in BTR

KOKRAJHAR, MAY 11 : Director of Health Services, Assam Dr Umesh Phangcho’s  two-day visit to Kokrajhar and Chirang districts of Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) was concluded on Sunday to assess the health situation, as directed by the Health Minister of Assam. 

On Saturday, Dr Phangcho visited malaria-affected areas in Kokrajhar district, where a significant spike in malaria cases has raised serious concerns among public health authorities.

During his visit, Dr Phangcho toured the remote villages of Saralpara and Bantijhora and personally reviewed the ground-level situation. He interacted with local health officials and frontline workers to monitor the progress of anti-malaria operations and preventive measures being undertaken in the affected zones.

As per official data, Kokrajhar district has recorded over 500 malaria-positive cases as of April 30, 2025. The outbreak has so far claimed three lives, including that of a 10-year-old girl and two teenage boys aged 15 and 19, highlighting the urgency of the health intervention.

Following the field visit, Dr Phangcho attended a high-level review meeting at the Kokrajhar District Headquarters, where he discussed immediate and long-term strategies to contain the outbreak. The meeting was attended by district health officials, administrative officers.

In Chirang,Dr Phangcho visited at the Sidli and Ballamguri block and field visited at the vulnerable areas and interacted with local authorities of the health department.He has emphasized to strengthen necessary preventive measures to check the malaria vector borne diseases across the area.

Dr Phangcho told that he assessed in depth on the prevailing situation of the malaria in the districts,and concerned authorities have initiated necessary preventive measures to eradicate the malaria disease.He has urged the citizens to be alerted while preventing the sparking of the malaria.
