Announces Enhanced Sports Infrastructure

KOKRAJHAR, JAN 20: Pramod Boro, the chief executive member of Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) inaugurated the 3rd edition of the Bodoland Sports Meet today at the SAI, STC, Titaguri Kanthalguri in Kokrajhar.

The event was organized by the Directorate of Sports & Youth Welfare, BTC, the three-day sporting extravaganza aims to celebrate the rich sporting culture of the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) and provide a platform for young athletes to showcase and enhance their talents across multiple disciplines.

This year’s edition features competitions in Football, Volleyball, Kabaddi, Archery, Athletics, Indigenous Games, and Para Sports, reflecting the region’s diverse sporting heritage and commitment to inclusivity.

Addressing the gathering, BTC Chief Pramod Boro emphasized the pivotal role of sports in the holistic development of both individuals and the region. He underscored the importance of discipline and perseverance in the lives of sportspersons and encouraged participants to set their sights on state, national, and international levels. He highlighted how sports, once primarily seen as a source of physical exercise and entertainment, have now evolved into promising career opportunities.

Acknowledging the infrastructure challenges in the region’s sports sector, the BTC Chief reaffirmed the Council’s commitment to strengthening sports facilities across BTR. He announced that the Bodoland Sports Policy is currently being drafted to provide a strategic framework for the growth of sports in the region. Expressing gratitude to the Indian Army for facilitating accommodations for athletes, he also unveiled plans to construct 500-capacity hostels for sportspersons in Baksa and Kokrajhar at an investment of ₹5 crore each. Additionally, he said that work on establishing a sports academy in Udalguri will soon commence to further nurture budding talent.

The opening ceremony witnessed the presence of several esteemed dignitaries, including EM of Sports & Youth Welfare Department, BTC, Daobaisa Boro; EM Sajal Singh; Commanding Officer of the 135th Infantry Battalion (Territorial Army), Col Gaurav Negi; Chairperson of Kokrajhar Municipal Corporation, Pratibha Brahma; Former MLA of Tamulpur, Chandi Basumatary; along with other notable personalities.
