Bodoland University celebrated National Sports Day in Kokrajhar

KOKRAJHAR, SEP 4: The Bodoland University celebrated the National Sports Day on Tuesday at y Bodoland University playground with the theme “Ek Ghanta Khel Ke Maidaan Mein!!” to commemorate the birth anniversary of Major Dhyan Chand, India’s legendary hockey player.

The event was celebrated with a series of sports competitions including Inter-departmental Football, Kabaddi and Tug of War. Faculty members from all academic departments actively supported and encouraged their departmental players throughout the competitions. Research Scholars, along with Integrated PG and Postgraduate students, enthusiastically participated in the different events, which added to the vibrancy and success of the celebration. The three-day programme was not only a sporting event but also a platform that fostered National Sports Day at Bodoland University.

The National Sports Day celebration began with an exciting and grand opening ceremony at Bodoland University. The event was graced by Prof. (Dr.) B.L. Ahuja, Hon’ble Vice-chancellor Bodoland University, Dr. Prahlad Basumatary, Director of Students Welfare, Bodoland University, along with two invited guests, Mr. Babul Basumatary, Director In-charge, Sports Authority of India, Kokrajhar and Mr. Sanjay Halwandi, Senior Wushu Coach Sports Authority of India, Kokrajhar.

The President of Bodoland University Students’ Union (BUSU), expressed his delight and honor in welcoming everyone to the special celebration of National Sports Day. He addressed the participants that the day was not only about celebrating the spirit of sportsmanship, but also about paying tribute to one of the nation’s greatest sporting icons, Major Dhyan Chand, India’s legendary hockey player.

In his welcome address, Dr. Prahlad Basumatary expressed heartfelt gratitude to the chief guest, Prof (Dr.) B.L. Ahuja, for his constant encouragement and support to the students. He warmly welcomed the invited guest Mr. Babul Basumatary and Mr. Sanjay Halwandi, for giving their valuable time to be part of the programme. Then he introduced Miss Daisy Rabha, a sportsperson who has brought name and fame to Bodoland University thought her outstanding achievements who recently brought name and fame to the University by winning two medals –one gold and one silver at an international event in Georgia sponsored by Bodoland University throughout her participation both in national level trial and participation in international event. Prof. B.L. Ahuja, Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor of Bodoland University felicitate Miss Daisy Rabha with a traditional Aronai along with a cash award of ₹ 5,000 (five thousand rupees only) for the achievement. Her remarkable achievement was warmly acknowledged with applause from the gathering.

Dr. Sharmistha Brahma Kour, Assistant Professor, Department of Biotechnology and Convener of the Organising Committee of National Sports Day, delivered an inspiring speech on the life and achievements of hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand. She began by reminding that National Sports Day is celebrated every year on August 29th to mark the birth anniversary of Major Dhyan Chand, who is widely regarded as a true icon of Indian sports. She briefly spoke about his early life, dedication to hockey and extraordinary achievements that brought India global recognition in the field of sports. She concluded her speech telling the honors and recognitions conferred upon him the prestigious “Padma Bhusan”.

On the final day of the National Sports Day celebration students once again gathered at the University Playground at 3:00 P.M on 31st August, 2025. The Day three programme included the finals of the Inter-Departmental Football (Male), Kabaddi (Female) and Tug of War (Male & Female), followed by the Prize Distribution Ceremony.

The first sports event was the Tug of War (male and female), played between the Department of Economics & Zoology and Department of Bodo & Geography respectively. After a tough competition, the Department of Economics and Bodo secured 1st position, while the Department of Zoology and Geography stood at 2nd position. The Inter-Departmental Football final was then played between the History Department and Bodo Department. It was an intense match, the History Department scored two goals in the second tiebreaker and won first place. While the Bodo Department scored one goal and secured in second place. In the Kabaddi Final, the Department of Bodo faced the Department of History. In a highly competitive game, the Bodo Department won and secured 1st position while the History Department secured 2nd position.
